Story

The origin

Datapane emerged out of a previous company we were working on called NStack, a Haskell-based infrastructure platform which helped companies integrate data science results into the tools they use.

NStack provided a suite of models alongside the tooling to connect these up to internal platforms, such as CRMs. Whilst selling the product, we underestimated the amount of custom services and consulting we would have to do for each customer. This usually resulted in us building tons of custom reports in tools like PowerPoint.

We had a wonderful, code-first way to pull and analyse data using the open-source ecosystem, but we found every time we created something for business users we had to use a clunky old UI-based tool! This was hard to automate, didn’t integrate with the rest of our stack, and lacked all the advantages of using a code first approach — such as versioning, testability, and collaboration.

To help us create data products for non-technical end-users we started building a library to help us create reports, dashboards, and apps using Python. This became Datapane!
